How Your Interests Define Your College Experience & the Rest of Your Life By Hannah Whittenly

Being successful in college directly correlates with succeeding in life. In fact, your interests and your major will define your college experience and the rest of your life. It is important to realize what motivates you and what makes you happy. In addition, self-examination will help you make major decisions about your career and life journey. Even if you have pondered these questions, it is always good to reaffirm you desires and interests.

Defining Your Interests

Your interests say a thousand words. They define who you are and what keeps you content. In truth, knowing your interests is the most important step in choosing the ideal career. Chances are, if your career choice matches your interests, then you are on the right path. Also, you will be a lot more pleased with your chosen occupation. For example, if you’re interested in history, you might want to consider getting an online master’s degree in history and then maybe either teaching or finding a way to incorporate your knowledge into your career.

If you have various interests or just a handful, you can take an interests test to help you determine what you enjoy the most. The test will generally list two activities at a time to choose from. The test results include your strongest interests based on your selections. There are other tests available that examine not just your interests but your abilities combined with your personality. Many tests can be found at a college, university or online.

Values

Values are the things in life that matter most. According to Psychology Today, values shape your life’s foundation. They motivate choices you make and influence your life path in all areas such as your career, love life, friendships, relationships and other engaging activities.

Many people adopt the same values that their parents have. Other values stem from society and one’s peers. Moreover, many specialists agree that the values we learn as a child stay with you through adulthood. Regrettably, some instilled values take you down a path that is not conducive to your heart’s desires. The key is to be able to evaluate your values and keep the ones that bring you happiness.

Unfortunately, these values may also have created a life that is carrying you down a path that is not the direction you want to go in at this point in your life. Once you identify your values, you will be on the road to choosing the right career.

Attitude

Attitude is one of the most important factors for succeeding in college and life. A positive attitude is the front-runner to motivation, and when you are highly motivated you have a better chance of succeeding and overcoming obstacles. Maintaining a positive attitude is vital. Remember, often times what you say and think is what you get.

Taking Control

To succeed in life and college, you need to take control. Once your interests are defined, you need to direct them appropriately. Decide what you want to do, then make it happen. Even if college seems overwhelming at times, make the best use of your college days by meeting new people and learning new things.

Hopefully, the above tips have been helpful to you in making sure that you’ll be able to have a happy future as you incorporate your likes and interests into your present and future.
